School: Garden Hills Elementary
Katie Carlson is concluding her seventh year of teaching in Atlanta, Georgia. She obtained her Bachelor’s degree from Ball State University in Indiana from 2003-2007. After graduation, she began her teaching career at Dresden Elementary in DeKalb County School district. She taught first and second grade for six years at Dresden Elementary. She created close relationships with both students and families in the school community and served on the PTA board for 4 years as secretary and co-president. In August of 2013, she was hired as Garden Hills Elementary as a second grade teacher. In her short time working for Atlanta Public Schools, she has grown tremendously as an educator. She has participated in multiple professional development opportunities including – Junior Great Books, Category 1 International Baccalaureate, Orton Gillingham multi-sensory Education, Captain Planet Learning Gardens and various other Early Literacy trainings. She has been working with The Captain Planet Foundation, PTA, students and staff to create learning gardens at the school. She has won a two-year grant from the Captain Planet Foundation, various Donors Choose grants and a Target Field Trip grant.
